The fight for rural Victoria
What we stand for …
Fighting for public land access, sorting out "the neighbours from hell", alpine grazing, better fire management, supplying Victoria's timber needs, private land rights, farmers, irrigators, hunting and fishing, horse riding and especially exposing the hypocrisy and danger of the Greens' party policies.
"The uncontested absurdities of today are the accepted slogans of tomorrow. They come to be accepted by degrees, by precedent, by implication, by erosion, by default, by dint of constant pressure on one side and constant retreat on the other - until the day when they are suddenly declared to be the country's official ideology." Ayn Rand (from S.O.S website)
In a time when people are greatly worried about our environment, city politicians are looking for large symbolic acts to convince voters they are ‘on top of the issues.’
Politicians are also prey to the decades old Green tactic of trading for second preference votes at election time. (Notice how national parks are announced in the final weeks of an election campaign.)
Only brave souls will dare to say we should be proud of our achievements in caring for Australia’s land, waters and forests – optimism and good news doesn’t sell newspapers.
Few are the voices which call for cool thinking, sensible decisions and prioritising issues. An almost religious hysteria prevails – to be a greenhouse sceptic is heresy.
In such a time country people, especially those on the land are the scapegoats who must pay for the alleged sins of the many.
• We are told that our forests are being destroyed when it is a fact
that they are being sustainably harvested. The consequence is that our Victorian
timber industry is all but dead and we import most of our timber needs.
• We are told that feral fire is ‘natural’ and that we
should ‘learn to live with it.’ Inadequate fuel reduction targets
are set and never achieved.
• Our Australian culture is being destroyed as mountain cattlemen
are removed from the country they have loved for generations.
• Roaming free in the bush is ever more restricted as prospectors,
horseriders 4wdrivers, trailbikers and campers are loaded with increasing
regulation.
• People are being deprived of an economical, sustainable supply of
vital winter heating as firewood collection is banned in national parks.
Government commitments to supply firewood from thinning programs have not
been met.
• Private land ownership is under threat from native vegetation laws
and restrictions on private native forestry. In Victoria new regulations
are under discussion which would force some landholders to pay consultants
to prepare expensive plans for the protection of aboriginal cultural heritage.
• Irrigators suffer due to governments pocketing the irrigation dividend
and neglecting upgrades and lining of irrigation channels. Only a prolonged
drought is bringing proposals for action.
